Can I have someone whose credit is better than mine co-sign my lease?
This is a good option if your credit is poor and you have a relative or good friend who is willing to go to bat for you. Most landlords will consider a guarantor — that is, somebody who co-signs your lease and agrees to pay your rent if you don«t — if they think you are a desirable tenant in other ways. However, keep in mind that out-of-state co-signers are useless to them, as they have no legal recourse should you abandon the property or fail to pay rent. So don»t ask your father in Massachusetts to co-sign! It would be better to find a financially established uncle or friend in Sacramento.
